The blockchain is a new paradigm of security that is built on the basis of an immutable and shared ledger that is in contrast to current technologies. Current technologies operate on the assumption that they are only accessible by authorized personnel and data can constantly be changed. Blockchain operates on the assumption that everyone has access to data but the data can only be added to and not changed. This provides an inherent level of security by creating an audit trail of all changes that cannot be altered while operating under the assumption that the data is already "compromised" i.e. accessible by everyone. Even though the blockchain provides inherent security it is not without it's own security risks. A blockchain system is compromised of code that lives on computers which a human interacts with through various interfaces such as a website. Each of these components poses a risk to the security of the system. The blockchain must be looked at from both angles: providing security and subject to security threats.
