Government Budget on Blockchain

During his 2024 presidential campaign, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pledged to enhance government transparency by placing the entire U.S. federal budget on a blockchain. Although he did not win the election, his subsequent nomination as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) presents a unique opportunity to implement this vision within the department.

In alignment with Kennedy’s commitment to fiscal transparency, the Government Blockchain Association’s (GBA) Budgeting, Accountability & Transparency Working Group is initiating a feasibility study to explore the application of blockchain technology to the HHS budget. This initiative aims to assess how blockchain can enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in managing the department’s substantial budget.

Implementing blockchain technology in HHS’s financial management could provide an immutable and publicly verifiable record of transactions, thereby increasing public trust and oversight. Given HHS’s extensive responsibilities, including managing Medicare, Medicaid, and various public health initiatives, such transparency could lead to more effective use of public funds and improved service delivery.

The GBA invites industry experts, government officials, and blockchain professionals to contribute to this pivotal study. Those interested in participating or learning more should join the GBA Budgeting, Accountability & Transparency Working Group.
