The News & Information Integrity Working Group focuses on leveraging blockchain technology to enhance the accuracy, transparency, and trustworthiness of news and digital information. In an era of misinformation and digital manipulation, this group brings together experts, technologists, journalists, and policymakers to develop blockchain-based solutions that promote verifiable and tamper-proof content.

This group actively recruits professionals from journalism, cybersecurity, media, and technology to collaborate on innovative solutions. Members contribute by developing work products such as white papers, reports, and best practices that address misinformation and media integrity. Additionally, the group promotes GBA members by showcasing their contributions to blockchain solutions for information integrity.

Key initiatives include researching and developing blockchain-based verification systems that authenticate sources, timestamps, and media ownership. The group explores ways to use blockchain for misinformation tracking by creating immutable records of news origins and modifications. It also advocates for decentralized journalism models that reduce reliance on biased or controlled platforms while working with regulators and media organizations to establish industry-wide blockchain standards.

Dr. Smithmyer is the co-founder and CEO of Black Wallet Limited. Holding 9 degrees and having been in the C-suite since 2006, Dr. Smithmyer is one of the leading minds globally in Conflict Management and Tokenomics. He is the author of over 20 books, ranging from conflict management, to politics, to cryptocurrency and business. He was the lead author on the Tokenomics supplement for the Blockchain Maturity Model, the UN’s methodology for looking at tokens within the blockchain. He is also slated to write the Smart Contract Auditing firm Assessment Later this spring. His latest project was writing the Model Law on Cryptocurrency and Digital Assets for the Internet Governance Forum of the United Nations. He is a Professor of MBA Business at Doane University and a Professor of Law at Regent University School of Law (Fall 2024). He has spoke at such prestigious conferences at the APEC affiliated APMF conference in Da Nang (at APEC) 2017, the JARI regional business development conference (2019), the Blockchain Legal Institute’s Legal Summit (2024), and is slated to speak and be on panels at the Government Blockchain Association’s Future of Money Governance and the Law Conference (May 2024) and the Kenyan Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Conference (June 2024).
