BMM Brings Integrity to Blockchain

BMM Published April 30, 2022

On April 30, 2022, the Government Blockchain Association (GBA) published the Blockchain Maturity Model (BMM). This model was developed over the past two years to give acquisition professionals the tools they need to evaluate blockchain solutions when making purchasing decisions. It also provides a standard to distinguish legitimate blockchain solutions from hype-filled promises.  Without this knowledge or framework, acquisition professionals will always choose traditional government contracting partners. The lesser-known, innovative solutions rarely get selected, stifling competition and progress.

The model describes eleven characteristics that should be considered in evaluating any blockchain solution. They are:

  • Distribution
  • Governance
  • Identity Management
  • Interoperability
  • Performance
  • Privacy
  • Reliability
  • Resilience (Fault Tolerance)
  • Security
  • Infrastructure Sustainability
  • Synchronization

Get BMM Training

The first qualified GBA assessor to lead a BMM team is  Mr. Dino Cataldo DELL’ACCIO, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). He has developed a blockchain solution for the United Nations and was one of the authors of the BMM. The BMM Team will begin formally training new BMM assessors at the GBA Blockchain & Sustainable Economic Growth Conference on May 25-27 in Washington, DC.  Other events are posted on the BMM Events Calendar.

“Many vendors need ways to demonstrate that their solutions are reliable and can be trusted.
They operate in environments lacking integrity and plagued by broken promises, hype, and corruption.
The BMM is a way that vendors can differentiate their reliable solutions from those of snake oil salesmen.”

– Gerard Dache, CEO, GBA

BMM Assessments Being Schedule Now

The first organization that has registered for a BMM assessment is Axes, a blockchain-based information management platform that licenses actionable intelligence and applications to the global gaming & amusement industry.

1st Blockchain Maturity Model (BMM) Lead Appraiser

New GBA BMM Lead Appraiser

The Government Blockchain Association (GBA) is pleased to announce that Mr. Dino Cataldo DELL’ACCIO, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF) has earned the designation of the 1st GBA BMM Lead Appraiser.

Mr. Caltaldo DELL’ACCIO has significant experience in governing, managing, auditing, securing, and advising on information and communications technology (ICT) systems, and operations supporting national and international civil, judicial, financial, and peacekeeping functions. He is one of the primary architects of the BMM and has a deep understanding of blockchain technology and the complexities of implementing blockchain solutions in an international environment.

The Blockchain Maturity Model is an assessment framework to allow public and private sector acquisition authorities to have confidence in the claims of solution providers. It also can be used as a consultative tool to help organizations mature their solutions to meet the needs of the public sector.

BMM Appraisal Requirements

As you may know, we are about to publish the Blockchain Maturity Model. You can read about it on the BMM FAQs Post. The Model series includes the following components:

  • BMM Overview– describing the common terms, definitions, and concepts universally applied in all the components of the BMM series.
  • Blockchain Maturity Model Requirements – describing what criteria is required at each level of maturity to ensure confidence in the solution.
  • Training Program Requirements – describing the method and criteria for ensuring that individuals have demonstrated their competence required to implement and assess BMM compliance.
  • Assessment Program Requirements – describing the method and criteria required to plan, conduct, and report BMM assessment results.

We are almost finished with the Model, and we are now also working on the BMM Appraisal Program Requirements. It is drafted and ready for review. Please download this document and submit your feedback to Meiyappan Masilamani at meiyappan09@gmail.com.

If you are interested in participating in this project, please log into the GBA site (you can only see the information if you’re logged in) and review the meeting details at GBA Standards WG Meetings (Members Only).

We are in the process of scheduling the first BMM Appraisals for the first half of 2022. These blockchains that are certified may be the first blockchains in history to be validated by an international standards body.
